Mears Skills Academy

Running on a four-week basis, here is a list of opportunities available:

Community investment:

  • Mears Skills Academy – helps Lambeth residents get work-ready so that they can get an apprenticeship or work opportunity. They will receive four certifications including the opportunity to gain a CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card. This would be suitable for a resident who is interested in going into the building/construction industry. The criterion for referring a potential candidate is only that they are 16 to 24 years old or long-term unemployed. For more information, read this flyer.
  • Mitie (work club) - runs on a monthly basis. The work club provides residents with the tools to equip them and find confidence in getting back to work.
  • DIY and handymen training to Lambeth residents who are interested.

Specialised projects:

  • Workwise Project – This specialised employment project is specific to size-criteria-affected households that are receiving a reduction in their Housing Benefit as a result of a spare room. This employment project works in partnership with St Mungo's Broadway that delivers dedicated and tailored support to Lambeth residents in receipt of work related benefits such as: JSA, ESA or Income Support. The project helps residents to build on and develop their skills, provides a resident with one-to-one coaching, links the resident to a wide network of supportive services and matches them to relevant job opportunities. This project does not cater for residents who do not fall within the criterion above.
  • Get.Set.Go – Another specialised volunteering project for size-criteria-affected residents who are receiving a reduction in their Housing Benefit as a result of a spare room. This three-month volunteer scheme will involve residents selecting a volunteer scheme (e.g. conducting resident surveys; estate inspections; gardening). The resident can expect to receive practical on-the-job experience, and in return, will receive a monthly rental adjustment to cover the shortfall in their Housing Benefit entitlement. They will gain employment and training in conjunction with this scheme in order to help them access job opportunities and work placements.

Local commitments:

  • Lambeth Working Brokerage – supports the delivery of local providers who work with Lambeth residents seeking employment by providing access to employment and training opportunities. They particularly ring fence vacancies on new construction developments, also, working closely with companies on the council's supply chain contractors to provide access to employment and training opportunities for local residents.
  • Lambeth Apprenticeships - via Lambeth Housing Standard, Mears, Keepmoat and Breyer have commitments to cater for an apprentice as part of their contractual obligations.

Organisations working with us:

  • High Trees Community Development Trust – Provides free, accredited training courses for adults and employment advice and support
  • Tree Shepherd – Provides a free enterprise course for people that would like to start their own businesses
  • Green Man Skills Zone – Provides one to one support and group training sessions for Lambeth residents seeking employment e.g. CV writing, assisted job search, help with applications and interview preparations
  • MI Comput Solutions – Provides computer and vocational training to residents on work related benefits, as well as providing free functional English and maths for any resident
  • Tomorrow's People – Helps unemployed young people, many of whom are involved with gangs and living in Lambeth, into work and training
  • Lambeth 360 - Provides employment support and mentoring for 18 to 30 year olds
  • Digibuddies - Assisting with free IT training for beginners and inexperienced users in various libraries on a weekly basis.

Recyclebank scheme

RecyclebankResidents on Blenheim Gardens Estate can now take part in the new Recyclebank scheme and earn discounts for recycling that can be used in local shops, cafes, restaurants and leisure facilities.

Lambeth residents are the first in London to be able to participate in the Recyclebank scheme, which has been introduced by the council to boost recycling levels and reduce the amount the borough spends disposing of waste.

Residents who sign up earn points every time they recycle. The points can then be used for a fantastic selection of rewards.

By simply recycling your waste and letting Recyclebank know, you could make up to £75 a year in savings when visiting restaurants or buying anything from books to clothing. You will even be rewarded with 300 Recyclebank points just for joining the scheme!

To sign up and start earning points visit

In anticipation of this scheme and the fact that recycling has been made compulsory in the borough's revised tenancy conditions, Blenheim Gardens RMO has introduced ten new recycling chutes on the estate in addition to the existing recycling banks offered. We have placed two of the new recycling chutes in Glanville Road, one in Blenheim Gardens, two in Prague Place and five in Ramilles Close. Blenheim Gardens Estate is therefore leading the away on estate recycling.
